GPX2SA – for Geocaching

To allow offline viewing of geocache information from GPX files when using DeLorme Street Atlas. To help make DeLorme Street Atlas a great tool for geocaching!

DeLorme Street Atlas 2008 supports importing GPX files. If you import a GPX file downloaded from, you can see each geocache on the map. Each geocache has a link to the website for details about the cache, but you must be connected to the internet to view these links.

GPX2SA allows you to view this cache information even when you’re not connected. It creates a set of HTML files on your hard drive, each describing a geocache. It also creates a modified GPX file with links pointing to these local HTML pages. If you import this new GPX file into Street Atlas, clicking on a geocache will load the proper local HTML file.

Note: some people seem spooked by the .vbs extension, since a lot of viruses have used that. I chose VBScript since it’ll run on basically any Windows box and doesn’t need any special tools. If you’re afraid my script is going to do something malicious, just take a look at the source.

To setup this program, open gpx2sa.vbs in a text editor and enter your output directory. Make sure you create the directory if it doesn’t exist. You might need to install the latest version the MSXML library from

Once you’ve done the one-time setup, just drag and drop a GPX file onto this script (the .vbs file) and you’ll get your files. Import the new .GPX file (found in the output directory) into Street Atlas and you’re done! Alternately, you can run this script from the command line. Enter “gpx2sa” on the command line to get command line usage instructions.

The latest version of GPX2SA is 1.0. Download it with the link below:
