Forum spam under control, for now

Hey all- Sorry for how bad the forum has gotten recently. The bots seem to be able to defeat all the built-in anti-spam measures. I’ve put a new anti-spam technique in place, and it seems to be working pretty well. Hopefully this will make the forums usable again.

Also, we’re coming up on winter here, so I’ll probably be able to spend some more time on the plugins. Sorry for the hiatus.

Geocaching with DeLorme Street Atlas

I recently picked up a copy of DeLorme Street Atlas 2008 with a USB GPS receiver at Best Buy for $60. It’s mapping and navigation software that basically turns your laptop into a GPS navigator for your car. My family and I enjoy geocaching, and this software ALMOST made it so much easier. You can view the location of geocaches in the software, but you can’t view the details about each cache without an internet connection.

To solve the problem, I put together a little script I called GPX2SA and figured I’d share it. In order to use it, you’ll need a Windows PC and a copy of DeLorme Street Atlas 2008 (I’m led to believe it’ll work with 2007, but I don’t have a copy to try it with). Try it out if you’d like and let me know what you think!

I haven’t had a lot of time to work on the plugin lately, but I’m not giving up on it. I have a few projects around the house to finish up but I’ll get back to work on the plugin when I can.

I just wanted to post to let everyone know that Lazy-K Gallery seems to be compatible with Wordpress 2.1. I’ve done some testing on two sites, and everything is working fine for me. If you come up with any problems related to the upgrade, be sure to let me know.

Version 1.4 - sorting options and bug fixes

Well, I’ve been trying to make time to get this version out for the past several weeks, but it’s the busy time of year.

Tonight I’m releasing version 1.4, which adds the ability to sort your thumbnails and subfolders either by name or modified date.
I also fixed an issue in the cache manager with photos in the root of the gallery, changed the cache manager to delete slide and thumbnail folders (not just their contents) and fixed an issue with comment number reporting.

There were quite a few code changes, basically some cleanup and bug fixes, and I decided to go ahead and release this version now. There’s getting to be quite a lot of testing that needs to be done to release a new version, but I didn’t have an awful lot of time to test this release. I am also working on putting together a public document listing all the testing required for this plugin in order to formalize the process and also allow others to test on their sites if they’d like to.

One note about the sorting, for now I’m just using the server’s “modified time” for date sorting, and I’m requiring the gallery administrator to specify the sort order on the options page. I had a number of requests for date sorting, but this is just my first attempt. I’ll add more features later, like using the create date and the EXIF date read from inside the file and allowing the website visitor to choose their sorting on the fly, but I wanted to get some feedback on this setup first.

Version 1.3.7 released, adding “subgalleries”

Tonight I’m releasing version 1.3.7, which adds a feature I’m calling “subgalleries”. Using subgalleries, you can include multiple galleries on your site, or just include a portion of your gallery in a post or page. See the next post for an example and some more information. This post includes what I call a “subgallery”. Basically, it’s just a subset of my full gallery, starting at a given directory. This subgallery starts in the “Animals” directory of my gallery.

Notice there’s no way to navigate higher in the gallery than the “Animals” folder. Also, I can put this subgallery in a page. Using this feature, you can effectively have multiple galleries on one site, or show just a subset of your full gallery (perhaps just the latest folder you uploaded, etc.)

To include this subgallery, I put the following tag in my post:

I’ve put version 1.3.6 online. Nothing terribly exciting in this release thought I’ve squashed a few bugs. You can grab it from the Lazy-K Gallery page.

If you’re using PHP safe mode or some of the restrictions like open_basedir, this release should fix some problems. There were also problems with non-JPG image files. Let me know if you have any problems.

Ok, unfortunately, I’m moving to a new support forum. Before I was using XDForum, which was nice in that it integrated into Wordpress. Unfortunately, I had problems with posts showing up multiple times, having to fix my permalinks every time I created a new post, etc. If I had more time to spend on it, I’m sure it could have been fixed, but before we get too far along I figured I’d make the switch.

My apologies to those of you who posted on the old forum, since those posts won’t transfer over. I’m going to leave the old forums up for a little while, but they’ll be disappearing before too long. Use the “Support Forums” link to the right, or follow this link:

Version 1.3.5

I have a new release ready to go. For version 1.3.5, I’ve added the ability to specify what folder your slides and thumbnails reside in, in case you want to change that. The big change is the ability to create your gallery page automatically (thanks to Mike for the idea). There’s a button on the options page that can create your gallery page for you.
